you don't buy that it will save electricity, drau? Let's see... you use lights less... which are electrical... hmmm...
DA, is it my fault you live in the freaking sahara?

I dont flip on a light just because I'm home. If it's dark out - yes, but if its still light out.... During summer months when it's still light out when I get home - it's gonna be a couple hours before I need to use the lights - I base my usage on need, not by what time the clock says.
If the sun stays up an hour later each day, that means it gets dark an hour later each day. So...
Let's say the sun is going down at 7 without DST... So at 7 you turn on your lights. Not because it's 7, but because the sun went down and it's dark out.
Now, if you set your clock back an hour, at seven it's still light outside. The sun now doesn't go down until 8, so 8 is now when it gets dark and people turn on their lights.

You need to finish the logic. Let's assume most people go to bed sometime at night and turn the lights out. With DST that's one hour less that the lights are on. But then you've got to figure the sun will come up later too. In our 24 hour business world, I don't think the energy savings amount to much. However, I do prefer more light later into the evenings in the summertime.

Yeah, but if you consider all the businesses that run without a third shift, and that includes almost all retail, it adds up. It reduces energy consumption by 1%, which translates to millions of $... According to the studies...
And yeah, the sun does rise later, but the sunrises and sunsets change with the seasons, and DST is just to kinda follow that.
Not that it matters cuz Energy Vampires are coming... or something....
I've always been envious, especially considering that one of the major roadblocks to IN conforming to DST in the first place was the farmers' argument that the cows would get confused. I'm all about bovine constancy. I don't think there should be a time change factor anywhere, but rather a universal clock and no time zones. Then, it's 5:00 everywhere at the same time. Retail in Boston can open at 18:00 while retail in Seattle waits until 23:00. We already have the same date across the globe, why not the same time?Originally posted by Drau:
I'd like to get non IN-residents input on this one.
Also, the rationalizations for energy savings and crime reduction don't hold much water considering that regions that do observe DST aren't really any better off. Yes, there is more sunlight in the evening, but the coffee pot goes on an hour earlier in the morning.
Ultimately, I'd go with DA's solution and just get rid of sunlight altogether. I've never much cared for it, either. We could just farm the moon, then, and have Earth paved over with giant mushrooms, and we'd all learn to jump really high and throw fireballs and fight evil turtles. Well, let's start with the sun banishing and take it from there....

WOO HOO!!!
Jor, i do understand the point - I really don't think it holds water, residentially speaking. And with retail, how may 8a - 5p businesses do you know that don't have lights on during business hours regardless of the amount of daylight?
